Pittsburgh Traffic Violence
Lets prevent any more deaths by remembering those who we've already lost!
FOURTH Death on Terrace St in Oakland
On December 5th, 2024, Jessie Maroney, housekeeper for the University of Pittsburgh, was killed in an act of needless traffic violence. This comes one short year after the death of Emily Watson, and a few short years after the deaths of Barbara Como & Mary Flaherty, all on this very same street. Until now, the City of Pittsburgh has not made any improvements to Terrace St.
Noone deserves to die on their way to school, work, or otherwise.
Improvements after Jessie Maroney's Death
Pittsburgh's Vision Zero Fatal Crash Response Team conducted a site visit at Terrace and Darragh, and also walked along Terrace Street. Based on the walk-through, the City will be implementing a few near-term adjustments:
No Turn on Red at:
Terrace and Darragh
O’Hara and DeSoto
3 Second Leading Pedestrian Interval:
Terrace and Darragh
O’Hara and DeSoto
Allequippa and Darragh
Traffic Signal Adjustments from flashing overnight to 24/7 “Stop and Go”
Terrace and Darragh
The City and the University of Pittsburgh are continuing to evaluate the corridor for additional improvements which take additional levels of planning, but we’ll be reaching out to discuss potential future plans for Terrace Street in the first half of 2025.
Thanks to all the work that everyone at Compete Streets at Pitt, Bike Pittsburgh, and more do to remember those lost to traffic violence and prevent future losses through advocacy and education. Please volunteer for one of these organizations or another closer to you to help end traffic violence and make our streets safe, welcoming, and accessible for all.
